A mailing list is an email subscription that is easy to get into, and easy to get out of. It differs greatly from "spam" in that it is not meant for advertising, and it is entirely solicited (you can control your subscription). To get into a mailing list, or to get out of one, usually you just need to send a command to the list server via email (instructions are provided).
