A Family Web Page by Christopher Sirmons Haviland

The web site (always in construction) is dedicated to the Sirmons side of my ancestry, including the allied famlies of Barfield, Wilson, Shaw, Gorgas and Taylor. We are descended from Edward Sirman of Pitt, North Carolina, USA. There are several other genealogies of varied spellings who have been proven to be collaterally related to us. (See http://DNA.SirmonsFamily.net, which points to William A. Sirmon's web site. Bill Sirmon is the foremost authority on the American branches of the family.)

Sirmons (Sirmans, Sirmon, Sirman, Serman, Sermon, etc.) is mostly a Southern family since the Revolutionary War. They migrated down from North Carolina, and before that, probably Maryland. It is quite likely they emigrated from Bristol. The family has been traced back to Eldersfield, Worcestershire, England in the 1400's.

Unfortunately many of the branches of this family cannot be linked to one another via sources, because the sources have been lost. We must rely on DNA to prove our connection, and will not likely ever know exactly who are various common ancestors are. Edward Sirman of Pitt County, NC is the earliest ancestor my branch can trace back to using traditional genealogical sources. We descend from his son Josiah Sirmans by his wife Harty Hardeman, who are both buried near the town of Sirmans in South Georgia. Josiah's son Benjamin was a Georgia State Senator, as was Benjamin's grandson Franklin B. Sirmans. I am descended from Josiah's son Abner by his wife Elizabeth Kirkland (daughter of Richard Kirkland R.S. and Hester _____), then from Abner's son Benjamin by his wife Nancy Shaw (daughter of Jeremiah Shaw Jr. and Rachel Horne), then by Benjamin's son Benjamin Hill Sirmans by his wife Mary Elizabeth Taylor (daughter of John G. Taylor and Eliza M. Smart), then by Benjamin Franklin Sirmons ("Daddy Frank") by his wife Pearl Estelle Barfield (daughter of G. Lafayette Barfield and Pharaby Currin Wilson), my great grandparents.
