James Haviland (son of Gilbert, Adam, son of Benjamin, son of Benjamin, son of William Haviland and Hannah Hicks) had ten children with his wife Martha Ingurson. They lived in Eastern, NY. Three of his sons moved their families to the areas of Raisin and Adrian in South Lenawee County, MI: Charles Haviland, born 26 Sep 1777 in New Fairfield, CT, with Esther Mosher, born 28 Sep 1775 in Ninepartners, NY; Ingurson Haviland, born 11 Aug 1785 in Oblong, NY, with Alice Chase, born 5 Dec 1785 in Pittstown, NY; and John Haviland with Naomi Chase.

These migrations produced a large community of Havilands in Lenawee County, most of them Quakers. Consequently there are two Quaker cemeteries with many of these Havilands:

Raisin Valley Cemetery
(For the Raisin Valley Friends Meeting)

Raisin Center Friends Cemetery
(For the Raisin Center Friends Meeting)

Charles' son Charles Jr. married a Canadian woman Laura Smith. She would become an historical figure as Laura Smith Haviland, a slavery abolitionist. (See her biography.) She is buried at the Raisin Valley Cemetery with her husband and two of their children who died young (Harvey age 20, and Lavina age 1). Her statue is erected in Adrian.

I would like to thank Anne Halford for supplying me with all this genealogical information and taking gravestone pictures at these two cemeteries. Anne lives in what is known as the Haviland Centennial farmhouse, what used to be the home of Amy (Hoag) Haviland (wife of Philo Darwin Haviland, son of James Haviland, son of Charles Haviland and Esther Mosher) in the 1800's, and Edith Haviland (daughter of George Eugene Haviland, son of Philo Darwin Haviland and Amy Hoag), a teacher and historian. The broken gravestone of a boy named Philo Darwin Haviland (possibly a son of Philo Darwin Haviland Sr. and Amy Hoag) was found in Anne's barn, probably moved here from the cemetery for restoration or preservation at some point.
