Per Greg Bova: "According to family lore, when my Grandmother Madeline Rose Haviland Plant, opened her HAVILAND ANTIQUES store in New Canaan, Connecticut sometime in the 1970’s; an elderly (?) gentleman entered her shop wanting to know why she was using his family name. She explained her Haviland connection and that appeared to satisfy the gentleman. I never did learn the details so I do not know how this Mr. Haviland was related to my grandmother. Also I cannot say the gentleman buried in the Lakeview Cemetery is the same man who spoke to my grandmother. The burial site is on a hillside overlooking the lake (actually more a pond) and contains four marked graves; the man and wife and two children who died in infancy."
In fact the plot Greg found was that of Theodore Haviland II, his wife, and his two infant grandchildren. (Evidently, his son, Theodore Haviland III, is buried elsewhere.) These are descendants of the Haviland porcelain dynasty. In fact Theodore Haviland II's grandfather was the famous Theodore Haviland after whom a style of china is named, and that Theodore's father, David, was the first founder of the family business. See the Haviland China page for more.
