Friends Cemetery, Queensbury

This small cemetery is not difficult to find. All it takes is a road map of Glens Falls / Queensbury. Just locate the crossroads of Ridge (9L) and Cronin and drive out there. Queensbury is a township that wraps around the North side of Glens Falls.

This Quaker cemetery is not huge, but it's not small either. It's slightly kept up, although some spots are getting a bit bushy, and there's a lot of racoon poo-poo so watch your step. Many very old gravestones here cannot be read. Fortunately, most of them are in good shape, and some are even recent.

My 3rd great grandparents are buried here: Solomon Haviland and Lydia Otis. Solomon's son Roger Foster Haviland (my 2nd great grandfather) used to be here, but I found out that he had been moved to a Haviland lot at the Pineview Cemetery after his widow died years later.

Notes: Lydia comes from a family of many judges, lawyers, and prominant politicians. Her brother was Harris Foster Otis, Mayor of Topeka, Kansas, who married Elizabeth H. Haviland, daughter of John Grant Haviland and Betsey Beech. (John Grant Haviland is buried at the Pineview Cemetery, Queensbury.) Harris Foster's son, John Grant Otis, was a U.S. Congressman in 1892 (Topeka, KS). Lydia's 3rd Cousin Once Removed was Harrison Gray Otis, U.S. Senator in 1817-1822 in the Federalist Party and Mayor Of Boston, Massachusetts in 1829-1832. One of his houses in Boston is a tour and headquarters of the Society for the Preservation of New England Antiquities.
